Pathu Thala Songs - Music Review

Pathu Thala is an adaptation of the Kannada film Mufti directed by Obeli N Krishna with Silambarasan and Gautham Karthik in the lead roles. The original movie had only two songs by Ravi Basrur, Rahman's involvement in the movie expands the scope of the soundtrack. The director reunites with Rahman after his debut film Sillunu Oru Kaadhaal. Let's see whether the director able to extract another memorable soundtrack from the veteran composer.

Namma Satham: Rahman concocted an enticing melody for the Namma Satham with ample help from Vivek's wordplay for the tune but felt Yogi Sekar's portions were underutilized especially the prelude sounds belonging to some other track. Though Rahman wins with the melody, the vocals are sub-par despite enough engagement quotient overall to the track. 

Ninaivirukka: Rahman shows his prowess with Ninaivirukka which kindles numerous expansive sounds produced by the composer from Vedhu Thanindhadhu Kaadu to Cobra. AR Ameen sounds his best while the composer builds up the sweeping keys and harmonies in the background. Eventually, Rahman reserves the best portion for Shakthisree Gopalan and she aces like a pro.

Nee Singam Dhan: Rahman reserves another anthemic song for Sid Sriram and the singer shows his brilliance as expected in the high pitch portions. Rahman fills the background with the hymnal chorus, fabulous harmonies, and the punctuating rhythm accompanied by brilliant arrangements topped by brilliant Celtic sounds in the interludes. The melody shifts the tone towards the end where Sid Sriram handles it deftly.

Raawadi: Shuba makes a splendid debut with the Raawadi. Rahman goes berserk with his imagination and is equally complemented by Shuba's boom box vocals. The arrangements flow from the middle Eastern touches to piercing percussion-dominated sounds before Nivas ends the soundtrack with his brief but effectual portions. The tone of the track remains us of the Machakari to Mayya Mayya from Guru.

Verdict: Rahman continues to push boundaries and experiment with the sounds. The soundtrack may not be the wholesome one but definitely deserves multiple listen.
