Vaathi/SIR Trailer: First Impression Report

Vaathi [Tamil]/ SIR [Telugu] is an upcoming bilingual starring actor Dhanush in the lead, and the movie is all set to release in theaters on February 17, 2023 i.e. next Friday. Both films had their trailer releases recently, and the videos have been tending at No: 1 on YouTube in both languages. First impression report of Vaathi/SIR from its trailers and what we know of the movies so far:

1. Actor Dhanush had pre-set expectations for the movie when he said during the film's audio launch, "Like a dialogue in the film that goes 'Education - give it out like temple prasadham, do not sell it like a five star hotel's food', the movie's story is only that". The trailer of Vaathi/SIR added to this by revealing Dhanush as a teacher who leads a crusade to educate, when government schools get privatized and students with a working class background stop attending classes.

2. This story arc is very reminiscent of the 1995 Hollywood film Dangerous Minds, which is a pioneer movie of this genre. Unlike Michelle Pfeiffer though, Dhanush faces an whole additional obstacle of a villain i.e. Samuthirakani , whose only focus seems to be making money out of education and nothing else.

3. Vaathi/SIR was also set up as a movie in the 90s that extends to the early 2000s [Incidentally Dangerous Minds was also set in a specific time period (1989) while it released in another (1995)]. Dhanush playing a period character (Anegan, Asuran, etc) is a cake walk for the actor.

4. It's a season of Telugu film directors making their way into Tamil. Director Venky Atluri seems to have tapped the Tamil nativity well, atleast from what one sees in the trailer. The story takes place in a village that borders on Tamil and Telugu states.

5. The overall production value of Vaathi/SIR promises an action entertainer with a relevant message of issues in the schooling system, that needs highlighting even today.
