Director Vetrimaaran's last directorial venture in Tamil was the Oor Iravu segment in the 2020 Netflix anthology film Paava Kadhaigal. The filmmaker's feature film release before that was Asuran in 2019 and ever since his fans have been waiting for a new movie from the director. Much like his 2018 Vada Chennai, which released as a Part - 1, Vetrimaaran's next film Viduthalai is also releasing as a Part- I. Recently the filmmaker was pictured beginning the dubbing process for the movie with one of his leads - actor Vijay Sethupathi.

A crime-drama adapted from B. Jeyamohan's 1993 short story Thunaivan that was released on Vikatan, Viduthalai - Part 1 stars comedian Soori in a full fledged lead role. The story follows the encounter attempt of a teacher (played by Vijay Sethupathi), with Soori playing police constable Kumaresan, one of the police officers taking him towards his end.

Viduthalai - Part 1 is expected to be ridden with communism, politics and a lot of other hard-hitting subjects. Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies is releasing this movie in Tamil Nadu. Produced by Eldred Kumar's RS Infotainment, Viduthalai also stars Gautham Menon, Prakash Raj, Rajiv Menon among others and has Ilaiyaraaja for music.
