Varisu Vs Thunivu: Preview & SWOT Analysis

Actors Ajith and Vijay have had their movie releases on the same day six times before - Dheena and Friends (2001), Villain and Bagavathi (2002), Anjaneya and Thirumalai (2003), Paramasivan and Aadhi (2006), Aalwar and Pokkiri (2007) and Jilla and Veeram (2014). 4 out of 6 times, there had been a clear verdict, and the trade is betting their chances on both films succeeding with the actors' 7th same day release - Varisu and Thunivu

Preview & SWOT Analysis of this head-to-head clash follows:

Strengths

Varisu

  • Vijay is undoubtedly the biggest strength for Varisu. The charisma he brings on-screen is unmatched even in a routine and tested template.
  • The family drama genre cannot be easily written off, as previously the industry witnessed some of the biggest blockbusters with it. Ajith's Viswasam is one prime recent example. All it needs is a solid emotional connect to make it work, and Varisu trailer promises that.
  • Thaman's music was adequate enough to boost 'hero' Vijay's image, which is a much needed factor for a commercial film.
  • All this added with punch dialogues, breezy locations and grand visuals, is a perfect cocktail check for a commercial film, which is usually a safe bet for a festival season release.

Thunivu

  • Ajith portraying a grey shaded lead is a cake walk for the actor. His "no name" character exudes cool swag with a touch of comical shade, and this ensures magic on screen.
  • H Vinoth, a director known for unique story telling has handled heist theme this time around. The subject may not be entirely new, but it is also not something Tamil cinema witnesses on a regular basis. It peaks interest as a result.
  • Thunivu's crisp runtime of 145. 48 minutes is a major plus for the film.
  • Aesthetically shot high octane action, comes across as another major USP of the movie.

Weakness

Varisu

  • The Telugu flavor is strongly felt throughout the trailer. Evidently, it has raised common audience's doubt about the nativity being tossed aside. It remains to be seen how the viewers in Tamil Nadu receive this aspect.

Thunivu

  • Compared to everything else the film has to offer, Thunivu's music seems to be a bit underwhelming. Music determines the elevation of high-rise moments and going by trailer, this seems to be missing. Ghibran's songs for Thunivu have been hits individually, but it remains to be seen if they'll translate the same in the movie.

Opportunity

The January 11 Pongal box-office clash has generated a buzzy interest over Tamil films from other regions. This gives an opportunity for both stars to expand their territories outside Tamil Nadu, especially in where there is familiarity, but little market or growth. Ajith and his films in prime overseas locations like the US or UK is a case in point.

Threat

Given the similar range of both movies, there could be direct comparisons and amplified verdicts with a clear-cut winner. For the section of the audience who typically pick one movie to watch for Pongal, they may end up choosing the better of the two, thus resulting in cannibalization of potential revenue for the relatively weaker movie.

Pre - Release Buzz Winner: The interest for Varisu over Thunivu is comparatively higher on internet platforms. However, it is well-known that the word of mouth for respective movies will be the ultimate deciding factor this Pongal weekend.

As always, look forward to our fair and balanced reviews post the movies' release!
