Before we jump into the review it is important to understand the meaning of this unique term called “deja vu” which says a lot about the canvas of this film.

déjà vu

/deɪʒɑː ˈvuː,French deʒa vy/

noun

a feeling of having already experienced the present situation.

"a feeling of déjà vu"

Deja Vu is a Tamil thriller film that stars Arulnithi in the lead. The film comes from the desk of debut filmmaker Arvindh Srinivasan and has been bankrolled by popular cinematographer PG Muthiah and producer K Vijay Pandey.

The film is an investigative drama that begins with a novelist and his writings that come to life. The story takes time to establish a rhythm and then once it gains the rhythm, it proceeds with a laser-sharp focus.

The major challenge in a film like this that involves the back story of multiple characters is that it can get very confusing. So many character names, their intentions and their link with the main story needs to be told in a tactical manner so that it doesn't end up becoming a confusing affair. In this particular attempt the writer just marginally wards this confusion. One wishes there was more clarity thrown at this aspect of the narration.

Popular yesteryear actress Madhoo is seen helming a major role in this story but underutilizes the opportunity thrown at her. Achyuth as the novelist delivers a seamless performance that helps the narration to pick up the pace. Other supporting actors like Smruthi Venkat, Chethan, and Kaali Venkat do a functional job.

Arulnithi once again shows off his style of not trying to play to the gallery. He does not indulge in any glamorous “hero” antics or unnecessary distractions for the sake of image building. His decision to stay with the story and behave as the character (note - not a hero) that the story needs makes him stand apart.

The story as such revolves around discoveries and conspiracies. It is like a very interesting dish cooked by an aspiring chef that lacks a pinch of salt. All technical aspects of the film function in a smooth manner to ensure it doesn't interrupt the flow of the narration.

Overall, Deja Vu had the potential of becoming a mind-blowing film but ends up being a thriller that leaves us with no complaints.
