Paper Rocket Songs - Music Review

Ramesh Kannan S

Paper Rocket is an upcoming Tamil movie directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi with Kalidas in the lead. Kituthiga Udhayanidhi got to extract a memorable soundtrack from Anirudh in Vanakkam Chennai as well as a couple of songs in Kaali from Vijay Antony. In Paper Rocket she collaborates with three composers Dharan Kumar, Simon K King, and Ved Shankar, and the multi-composer soundtrack is rare in Tamil. Let's check how this one works out.

Cheranaadu

Cheranaadu's rock-folk fusion is a delightful listen where Simon K King brings together enjoyable sounds in the arrangements but the uncanny similarity to Vishnu Vijay's Appalaale is difficult to shrug off. Godfrey did a fantastic job with the pulsating guitar strums and the rhythm structure works to the song's favor. Simon K King aptly ropes in Ramya Nambeesan to croon this song where her Malayalam accented rendition complements the overall soundscape of the track.

Vaana Veetilae

Vaana Veetilae is a peppy guitar-laden breezy track from Simon crooned by three singers Sony Daffodil, Sanah Moidutty, and Shilvi Sharon. A foot-tapping guitar strum and Celtic elements are incorporated throughout the arrangements.

Jo Jo Jo

Ved Shankar who produced dazzling music in Azhagu Kuttichellam gets to show his prowess in Jo Jo Jo where the lilting melody is adorned with captivating arrangements. Haricharan ably aces the tune with his impeccable rendition especially the improvisations in the Charanam when the lyrics go as 'Nenje Sondhangal Veetukku Alangaram'. One wishes that Ved Shankar gets to compose more music for the film.

Oru Kanni

Though Ved Shankar's second track for the album has a peppy tune, the melody in the Charanam falls flat despite a promising start. The energetic rendition of Sreekanth Hariharan and the solo violin interlude make this a song to listen to.

Orayiram Jenmam

Orayiram Jenman's minimalistic acoustic guitar-laden melody slowly progressed into the gentle light-rock territory but the tune fails to engage the listener despite the effectual rendition by Keshav Ram.

Iruvizhi

With its extravagant arrangements, blowing horn sections, and drums, Iruvizhi is an interesting jazz attempt by Simon K King. This tune is owned by Alexandra Joy's ebullient renditions that match the sprightly sounds going on in the background.

Kaalai Maalai

Kaalai Maalai is bogged down by the dejavu-feel in Sid Sriram's singing, and Dharan Kumar's tune doesn't help either. The track turns slightly better with the nicely employed groove in the tune around the 'Naalai Enbadhu Nilavaaga' portion but the respite didn't last long.

Kandaen Kandaen

Dharan Kumar does much better with Kandaen Kandaen where the track starts on a mellow note before gradually entering into a crescendo. The composer did a stupendous job with the arrangements and especially loved the haunting score in the interludes with the gorgeous keys and string sections. Srisha Mohandas is effortlessly brilliant in the affecting melody.

Bottomline

Paper Rocket is a fresh and impressive attempt by composers that partially succeeds.
