Oscars slap a 10 year ban on Will Smith! What this means

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has slapped a ten year ban on Hollywood actor Will Smith as an action against his assault of comedian Chris Rock on live broadcast. To the unversed, Will Smith shocked the world when he stormed on stage mid-ceremony during Oscars 2022 and smacked presenter Chris Rock for a 'joke' made on Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head.

Jada, Will's wife was at the Oscars 2022 to support him for his Best actor nomination for King Richard, that Will ended up winning as only the 5th black actor, in an extremely distressed state. After weeks of social media storm, the Academy finally announced, "The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,"

Will Smith's action would have warranted an expulsion from the board too, but the actor had already resigned following the incident while issuing a detailed apology to both the Oscars and Chris Rock. [Worth mentioning here that Chris Rock has taken a dig at Jada Pinkett Smith at the Oscars on two occassions and it wasn't officially clarified by the Academy whether the 'jokes' were written by their writers or the comedian himself].

Director Steven Spielberg and actress Whoopi Goldberg, the latter of whom has been vocal against revoking Will Smith's Best Actor Oscar, were among those invited to rule on this action. This ban means that Will cannot attend any event hosted by the Academy till April 8, 2032. He will also not be able to present the Best actress award at Oscars, 2023; traditionally the Best Actor from the previous year hands them out.

However Will Smith is still eligible to be nominated and win an Oscar in the future.
