Director Karthick Naren who impressed the Tamil cine audience with his debut film Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru has had many unsuccessful attempts at strengthening that foothold. His second film Naragasooran never released and Mafia: Chapter 1 wasn't great enough to warrant other chapters. So when the filmmaker teamed up with Dhanush for Maaran, he was expected to follow up the little success he tasted with Project Agni [the only good chapter in Netflix's OTT original Navarasa].
However right from the word go, Maaran was shrouded with controversies. Ego tussles between the director and Dhanush is said to have escalated so much, that at one point Karthick Naren is said to have not showed up for the shooting of his own film. Also lyricist Vivek was said to have walked out of the movie at some point.
Maaran released on Disney Plus Hotstar last evening and one of the common points that most film reviewers noted, was how disjoint one scene of the film was from another. Overall it seemed like the movie was not completed but stitched out of the footage that was already shot. Adding fuel to this fire, in a now-disappeared/deleted story, Karthick Naren cryptically wrote, "Right, I'll tell you the truth later". [Maaran Review Here]
