"Why this kolaveri  di" - First Impression Report (FIR)

In the series of "Evan Di Unnai Pethan", "Voda Voda Dhooram", "Kadhal en Kadhal", "Pondatti Veppati" songs, next comes the much hyped "Why this kolaveri kolaveri di..." single. The songs in the above list managed to walk the tight rope by delicately balancing colloquialism while maintaining professional production values. However, the Kolaveri song appears to have stretched this concept a bit too far imparting a feeling of deja vu. This is probably due to Kolaveri song releasing closely on the heals of Mayakkam Enna songs which also had Dhanush write and sing about similar love failure theme. 

Reviewers have already called Kolaveri as the anthem of the youth. Looking beyond all these hyperboles, we feel it is a bit shallow and the longevity of the song in the music charts remains to be seen. This song may work well for the first few listens. But, it is tiring to imagine that singer Dhanush has sung half a dozen more songs in this movie. It is even more weary to envision that the young Poetu has also written all the lyrics. Hope rest of the songs in the album has something new to offer.

On the positive side, Music director Anirudh's use of various instruments and mixing of the song is quite mature and seamless. This promising 21-year-old is a welcome addition to Tamil cinema. The song recording video was also released along the same lines as Akon's rendition of Chammak Challo from Ra.One. 

Dhanush mentioned that "while shooting, I had a lot of free time and just wrote dummy lyrics for fun. so turned out that everybody liked it and we recorded the song with the same lyrics". Music Director Anirudh quoted in a similar vein that "the Kolaveri song happened in 10 minutes. It was effortless, we just casually worked on the song."  Yes, the end result clearly shows!
