Desingu Raja review - King of Some Laughs

by Bharath Vijayakumar

Director Ezhil is known for soft romantic movies such as Thulatha Manamum Thullum and Poovellam Un Vaasam. After a brief hiatus he came back with the rural comedy 'Manam Kothi Paravai' with romance as the backdrop.  'Desingu Raja' follows the template of 'Manam Kothi Paravi' to a T.

Plot:

Idhayakanni (Vimal) falls in love with Thamarai(Bindhu Madhavi). But they both belong to families that are at loggerheads for generations. Members of both sides are blood thirsty and will leave no stone unturned to have their taste of revenge. A pretty serious one liner you might think. But the treatment is anything but serious.

Cast:

Vimal always seems at ease in the role of a rural youngster. He faltered in a few movies where he tried to portray a city bred youth. But Desingu Raja is home turf and Vimal seems apt again. But the scope for performance is limited. Bindhu Madhavi pretty much does what is required of a heroine. Her lip syc at certain places is a downer. Soori , Singam Puli and Ravi Maria are precisely the reason that Desingu Raja works to certain extent. The latter two almost reprise the roles they played in Manam Kothi Paravai. Nevertheless it is still enjoyable, at least in parts. Vinu Chakravarthy seen after a while on the big screen impresses with his effortless potrayal as Vimal's father.

Music and Direction:

D. Imman has churned out numbers that you wont complain much about. But surely they are not in the same league as that of the composer's recent chart-busters. The film's running length seems appropriate and there are not many scenes that will test your patience.  Director Ezhil seems to be contented in making a reasonably light hearted film that packs a few laughs. The actual situation is supposed to be tensed involving temperamental people who can get easily agitated. But most of these characters are also involved in buffoonery. Fittingly even the climax is such and possibly one that you would least imagine. Though the jokes keep coming at a reasonable pace a little more hard work in making the romantic track and other aspects engaging would have made Desingu Raja worthwhile.

Bottomline:

Desingu Raja turns out to be a king that you will neither love nor hate.If you are one of those who did like director Ezhil's last outing then Desingu Raja will provide you a similar experience. The antics of Soori and Singham Puli that provide some harmless fun make Desingu Raja watchable.
