Yuvan 100 - Biriyani Songs Review
The expectation for Biriyani has been high because this marks Yuvan’s 100th album during his 15 glorious years in the industry. The expectations is further heightened since Yuvan has always reserved some of the best tracks for Venkat Prabhu. After accidental leak of Biriyani soundtracks on August 15th , the songs are now officially available on iTunes and on CDs.
Songs Review
Biriyani’s theme song “Nahna Na Nah” is highly addictive and a sure winner. There are at least 3 variations of this song in the album. The extended mix version plays to the galleries with faster paced rendition mixed with kuthu beats. The highlight is that it opens with mass ‘Mankatha’ lines and wraps up with legendary Rajinikanth’s "Padayappa" dialogues. Yuvan scores again with "Pom Pom Penne" with rich range of instrumentation transitioning from Jazz, foxtrot and other western styles quite seamlessly. Madhan Karky's lyrics stand out from rest of the album for its levity and clarity.
The title song “Biriyani” begins with andean sounds and catchy whistling that will keep you hooked till the end. It is uncertain whether this will reach the masses as most of the lines are in English and incoherent. “Run for your Life” is a heady mixture of various music styles and familiar lead tune from yesteryears. Yuvan decides to go bonkers in this song with unconventional mixing and hilarious lyrics.
“Edhirthu Nil” is the much touted song showcasing the coming together of Yuvan's peers and notable musicians -- GV Prakash, Imman, Vijay Antony and Thaman. Despite the high pitch shrill chorus and uncanny resemblance to “Nimirnthu Nil" from Saroja, the song has its high moments aided by punchy lyrics.
“Mississippi” song is loaded with sexual references, punctuated with moaning sounds and funny exchanges between Karthi and Premji. Karthi has sung conservatively in his first song and has done a relatively better job than Premji who sounds off-scale. This song may get noticed initially and could wear out soon after.
Album Summary
Yuvan's 100th album is filled with fun and frolic in typical Venkat Prabhu style. Venkat Prabhu’s penchant for bikinis, girls, party and beaches in Biriyani tracks continue from his past movies. Yuvan conveniently yields himself to the current trend afflicting Tamil music with liberal use of “beeps” to mask expletive lyrics and use of popular mass hero's famous punch lines in songs. Since the songs are unabashedly aimed at commercial audience and the listeners are advised not to look for deeper meaning in lyrics.
Bottomline : Yuvan Unleashed!
Rating : 7/10
