Arun Vijay, Prasanna starrer Mafia directed by Karthik Naren hit the screens worldwide on February 21 got an excellent opening by grossing Rs. 7.2 cr in its opening weekend. The film which carried a good pre-release hype bagged mixed reports from critics and audience for being high on style and low on substance. After the initial opening, the film's performance declined on Monday (Day 4) due to average word-of-mouth.  

Karthik Naren's film failed to pick up momentum and did below average business in its first week and the second weekend performance has also dipped further. The film has raked in Rs. 10.62 cr in TN and Rs. 1.86 cr in Chennai city in 10 days. According to sources, the film's rights were sold for Rs. 5.5 cr and the breakeven mark stands at Rs. 12 cr. The film is likely to end up as a loss venture for the distributor's due to its underwhelming performance.
