MC Weekly Earworm: Week 25

Weekly Earworm – Week 22 | Ramesh S Kannan

Thaman's chartbuster hit Samajavaragamana get its female version by Shreya Goshal while Ilayaraja scores with the two melodies for Thamizharasan

  • Ala Vaikunthapuramlo (Telugu): Thaman S: Samajavaragamana: The blockbuster song by Sid Sriram get its female version crooned by Shreya Goshal. The male version is more rock flavoured and packed a punch whereas the female version is symphonic one. The interesting part is the song is arranged by another underrated composer Ramesh Vinayakam. Shreya Goshal aces the one as usual with her impeccable rendition.

  • Oh My Kadavule (Tamil): Leon James: Kadhaippoma: Leon James delivered a winner in Kadhaippoma after a couple of not-so-likeable songs for the movie Oh My Kadavule. The breezy guitar-laden background played by Keba Jeremiah where Sid Sriram takes care of the vocals in the verses of Ko Sesha.

  • Utthara (Telugu): Suresh Bobili: Naalo Unna Andhagaada: Suresh Bobili who earlier gave the wacky Thippara Meesam comes up with the pretty much standard soundtrack but Naalo Unna Andhagaada and Oo Choope stood out. The former is the lovely twist of folk song which instantly reminds me of Hey Pillagaada from Fidaa and Nutana Mohan is splendid with her singing. In Oo Choope composer successfully channels Harris Jayaraj type composition and churns out the winner here.

  • Thamizharasan (Tamil): Ilayaraja: Paakurapo Paakurapo, Yaavum Yaavumey: Thamizhanoda Veeramellam in Sid Sriram vocals sounds awkward mainly because of the singer as well as the tune definitely belongs to another era. But Ilayaraja scores in the lush melody Paakurapo Paakurapo and the sweeping string arrangements screams Ilayaraja name from the vocal harmonies in the prelude. Though the age factor is definitely apparent in Raja's vocals, the lovely melody compensates for this minor grouses. Yaavum Yaavumey is another melody where Raja wins with ample support of Vibhavari and VV Prasanna. Among the two veterans SPB and KJ Yesudas's songs, Poruthadhu Podhum by Yesudas stood out for it's thumping orchestration and definitely the veteran's rendition.

  • Anugraheethan Antony (Malayalam): Arun Muraleedharan: Kaamini: Arun Muraleedharan who worked in many short films and made his Malayalam debut in Happy Wedding. Kaamini from Anugraheethan Antony is a delightful melody which reminds mostly of Rahul Raj's composition and the signature violin solo by Rithu Vysakh in the backdrop of chanting Kaamini is a blissful part in this sweeping melody.

Pick of the Week: Kaamini, Paakurapo Paakurapo, Samajavaragamana
