Kollywood films have a proven solid market in Kerala. Both the Diwali releases Bigil and Kaithi which hit the screens on October 25 have emerged as winners at the Malayalam Box Office. Kerala is the first territory where both the films have turned profitable to the distributors in the opening weekend itself.
Vijay has a strong fan base in Kerala and his recent release ‘Bigil’ has emerged as the highest grossing Tamil film in Kerala by minting Rs. 10+ cr in its opening weekend. Bigil has surpassed the lifetime collection of Rajinikanth's Petta, Suriya's Kaappan and Ajith's Viswasam. The film has touched Rs. 10 cr mark in 3 days which marks Vijay’s sixth film to have achieved this feat in the state following Thuppakki, Kaththi, Theri, Mersal and Sarkar.
Prithviraj's production company Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames acquired the distribution rights of the film in Kerala on a commission basis. According to trade sources, the film is a ‘hit’ already.
On the other hand, Karthi’s ‘Kaithi’ is also having a dream run in God’s own country. Due to huge demand, the film got more shows / screens on Sunday. Karthi’s film grossed Rs. 1.78 cr in 3 days earning a share of Rs. 75 lakhs. With the film’s distribution rights sold at Rs. 60 lakhs, the film has already recovered its investments and has entered the 'profit zone’ as a ‘hit’ venture.
Surprisingly Tamil films lead the Kerala Box Office for the Diwali weekend (Oct 25 -27) with Bigil and Kaithi taking the top 2 spots followed by Vikruthi.
