Times Viral Internet Sensations grabbed Film Industry's Attention!

The migration of social media stars like YouTubers (Temple Monkeys Vijay Varadharaj, Temple Monkeys Shah Ra, Erumai Sani Harija), Instagram Influencers and stand-up comedians (Put Chutney Rajmohan Arumugam, RJ Vigneshkanth) to mainstream cinema speaks of the 'internet influence' the movie industry has been seeing in recent years.

This influence of the world wide web isn't restricted to up-scaled internet celebrities alone; it extends to commoners as well who've attained overnight popularity, thanks to the power of 'going viral'. One upload is all it takes for talent to get noticed these days and here we bring to you the times when such 'internet sensations' grabbed the attention of people from the film industry.

  • Senthil Ganesh, Rajalakshmi - Although not exactly internet sensations, folk-singer couple Senthil Ganesh and Rajalakshmi came under the spotlight after their participation in the reality show Airtel Super Singer, making their earlier singing videos go viral, most prominently their ‘Chinna Machan Sevatha Machan' rendition. The song was eventually adapted for a Tamil movie (Charlie Chaplin 2) by composer Ambreesh, who also gave the duo their first playback singing debut. (Also Read)

  • Sheril Kadavan - The dance performance by a Kerala-based teacher named Sheril G Kadavan with her colleagues and students  to the song, Jimmiki Kammal took the internet by storm in 2017. So much so that film offers including opportunities from Tamil cinema went her way but she chose family life instead and decided to get married.

  • The RCB Girl - A case similar to Sheril's was that of Deepika Ghose, who became an overnight internet crush as 'the RCB girl' after cameramen kept focussing her while she was cheering for the RCB cricket team in a red off-shouldered top. Ghose was already a stylist with connections to Bollywood and while she grabbed the attention of few film-makers down South, she continued to carry-on with her stylist-dreams and choosing the familial life.

  • Rakesh Unni - A rubber estate worker from  Alappuzha district in Kerala, Rakesh Unni gained social media fame after a video recording of him singing 'Unnai Kaanadhu Naan' from Vishwaroopam went viral. The video gained original singer Shankar Mahadevan's attention who then invited Unni to be a part of his concert. Unni was also invited by Kamal Haasan to his Chennai office subsequently offering a chance under Ghibran's music, which is yet to materialize.

  • Ranu Mondal - Probably one of the biggest finds of the Indian digital space, senior citizen Ranu Mondal shot to fame after a video of her singing Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai at the Ranaghat Railway Station surfaced on social media. The video went crazy viral and Ranu was invited to be a part of a reality show, where Himesh Reshammiya  appreciated her vocal skills and ended up recording a song with her.

  • Tirumurthy - The latest addition in this list is the  Krishnagiri-based visually impaired singer Tirumurthy whose version of  Kannane Kanne from Viswasam has garnered more than 4 lakh views on social media. Composer of the song D. Imman has openly expressed his interest in working with this latest viral sensation and it is only a matter of time before we get to see that materialize.
