Aadai Music Review - An Interesting Indie Detour!

Aadai Songs Music Review

Suhansid Srikanth

Nee Vaanavillaa.. an achingly poppish indie piece of melancholy is sung by Shakthisree Gopalan. The tamping beats that storm-in slowly adds to the mood. The hook part 'Hey.. Kaalam undu.. Kaathum undu.. Neeyum theva! Vaanam undu.. Vazhiyum undu.. Indha vaazhkkai theva!' talks of what's supposed to be the spirit of the film. The maddening groove towards the end of the song gets freewhirling and crazy. Bharath Shankar's lyrics shines big time in lines like 'Kanava vedhachi karaiya kadakka varundhum manasukku.. Kasiyum periya valiya adakkum mudivu theriyala!'

Oru Naal.. written by the director (Rathnakumar) himself and sung by Pradeep Kumar is my favorite track of the album. The number that talks about the uncertainity of life is a mood-piece on existentialism. Pradeep's rendition poignantly sketches how weirdly ironic the life is.. its trance state of being a curse and gift at the same time. 'Aazhmanam.. azhagaai kai korkkudhe!', goes a line! The passive flow of music that doesn't override the lyrics shade a sense of essence to the context it addresses.

Onnumilla.. written and sung by Bharath Shankar is a happy-go track on and about the liberty everyone out there deserves to dream! 'Kaalam Neram poiyyi! Un kanavu mattum meyyi!', it says. The lyrics even call the moon as a body that drinks the sun. (Kadhira karaikkum nilavu!) The number is filled with perspectives to look at priorities, preferences and choices that we make.

Aadai Theme.. to be used more as an OST is operatic in its mood. What starts off as a simple tune raises to a gloomy rage of sadness and lands on a closure that is even more onto the drama.

Bottomline:

Aadai has to be the most lyrically enriching soundtrack to hit Tamil Cinema Music since Aruvi. The indie vibe Pradeep Kumar and band Oorka brings to the table allow the album to be free of genre / labels and vibe carefree.
