Debate Sparks over Dangal, Secret Superstar actress Zaira Wasim quitting Bollywood citing Religion!

 

18 year old Zaira Wasim who was first seen as the younger Gheeta Phogat in Aamir Khan's Dangal and swayed the audience with her performance in Secret Superstar, is currently awaiting the release [October 11, 2019] of her third film The Sky is Pink which she shares with names like Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akthar among others. At this time, the teen-actress has announced her decision to quit films once and for all, citing it "threatened her relationship with religion" and "damaged her relationship with Allah".  

In a lengthy Instagram post, Wasim wrote, "As I stepped foot in Bollywood..I started to become a prime candidate of public attention..and was often projected as a role model for the youth..However that's something that I never set out to do or become..As I complete 5 years today, I want to confess that I am not truly happy with this identity i.e. my line of work.."

She further added, “This field indeed brought a lot of love, support, and applause my way, but what it also did was to lead me to a path of ignorance, as I silently and unconsciously transitioned out of ‘imaan’ (faith). While I continued to work in an environment that consistently interfered with my ‘imaan’, my relationship with my religion was threatened...

....I continued to put myself in a vulnerable position where it was always easy to succumb to the environment that damaged my peace, iman and my relationship with Alllah...Therefore today I arrive at this well grounded decision and I officially declare my dissociation with this field”

Zaira's statement has sparked a debate on social media with many seeing it as a 'wrong precedent' and others backing the actress for her 'freedom of speech'. While actor Siddharth noted through his tweet that maybe the actress "didn't belong here afterall", actress Raveena Tandon came down heavily stating, "Doesn’t matter if two film olds are ungrateful to the industry that have given them all. Just wish they’d exit gracefully and keep their regressive views to themselves.

However, Zaira also received ample support from others in her decision with one twitter user @_sabanaqvi writing, "Who on earth are we to judge #ZairaWasim and her choices..a spiritual path works for many people...May she find the peace she seeks with Allah.", while another user @nikhil_thatte pointed out the hypocrisy being thrown at the actress. He said, "Vinod Khanna a BJP MP quitting Bollywood to become a monk is a great leap into spirituality, but Zaira Wasim quitting Bollywood is regressive. Wow."
