Thani Oruvan starring Jayam Ravi and Aravind Swamy in the lead roles directed by Mohan Raja hit the screens on August 28, 2105, exactly three years ago. On its third anniversary, Mohan Raja has a made a special announcement on his Twitter page about making Thani Oruvan 2 with Jayam Ravi in the lead role. He also thanked the team of Thani Oruvan and also the audience for the overwhelming response for the film's success.

Thani Oruvan which showcased a race of time between brains of law and that of science, went on to become a blockbuster hit. Although director Mohan Raja has helmed several super-hit Tamil remakes, Thani Oruvan was a turning point in his career as it marked his first original film. Mohan Raja's last outing was Velaikkaran with Siva Karthikeyan which hit the screens in 2017.
