Iruttu Arayil Murattu Kuthu Review-A lot of 'meat' but very less cooking!!!

It is not rocket science to know what you are going to get when you enter a film titled 'Iruttu Arayil Murattu Kuthu'. Oh! Hold On! I really meant the rocket that launches into space and not any other meaning that you might infer if you are just out from a screening of this film. The very little adult comedy that Tamil cinema has seen so far has really not set the bar high. By bar I am not referring to the level of explicitness but the fun quotient of these films. This is another film that relies more on the former. The makers seem to think that merely lowering the neckline of the dresses that the women in the film wear and finding words equivalent to masturbation and body parts are enough to make a sex comedy. Truth to be told they might actually be right in a way given the fact that the audience that I saw the film with did seem to find enough reason to keep laughing at regular intervals.

Director Santosh does get few things right in IAMK. For starters he ensures that the plot is wafer thin. There were a lot of unecessary parallel storylines in Harahara Mahadevaki. Here things are pretty straightforward and most of the movie in fact happens inside a house. The idea to treat scenes like episodes of Big Boss is another good idea though it is not as funny as it could have been. A party song treated as an anthem for porn too does give an hint that there has been at least a little effort to be imaginative. A few stretches in fact work.But these are small sparks and most of the movie is anything but imaginative. But this is really not the problem of this film alone or even Tamil cinema for that matter. The Grand Masti(s) and Mastizaade(s) from Bollywood too treat adult comedy in a similar fashion. The irony being that we get the most juvenile of jokes in films meant for adults.

The film could be a money spinner and I firmly believe that this has got to do with the fact that the audience seem to relish the experience that they are able to see stuff on Tamil screen that they are not used too.But now given the assurance that there is an audience for this genre I really hope we have makers who explore this to make proper comedies. These films are supposed to be naughty and dirty and there are no two ways about it. But you need to build these jokes around something right?And you need actors who make the comedy work. Guns would automatically find a place in an action movie. But whether the movie works depends more on the characters wielding the guns. And so it is for adult comedies. You can have cleavages all around but that does not elliminate the need to sketch basic characters.

Bottomline

There is a lot of talk about a lot of juices in the film. Sadly it is the creative juices that seem missing. The film will work with its target audience simply because this particular group seems to be more interested with the moaning and very less about the actual performance.
