Another Rajinikanth movie in trouble : Producer Thanu responds to Kabali distributor Selvakumar's suicide threat

To state that Rajinikanth has been having a rather tumultuous week would not be an understatement given the teaser leaks of Kaala and 2.0 and the controversy surrounding his 2 year old movie Kabali. To the uninitiated, GP Selvakumar, the distributor of Kabali in south Arcot and Puducherry areas, has alleged non payment of Rs. 1.5 crore by producer Kalaipuli S Thanu. The problem was brought to light after posters were put out near Rajinikanth’s house in Poes Garden that asked, “Will Rajinikanth, who has entered politics to save the people, save the family of GP Selvakumar, who has no way for his next meal and is on the streets with his family?”

Selvakumar claimed ignorance of the posters but in a media addressal has said  “I was out of town when I got the information and saw the poster. I was very affected mentally. I ran back here(to Chennai). That I owe debts is true, it cannot be denied...  I have explained my situation to Superstar Rajinikanth and my guru and godfather Thanu. They could have saved me before I came to this stage. Thanu sir did not save me. Debtors have pushed me to the point of putting a full stop to my life. Before they could end my life, I have come to feel that I should commit suicide.”

He further added, I won't say Thanu sir has cheated me. I will say the circumstance (indicating losses from the film) for him returning my money has not come..I plead with folded hands to Thanu sir to please return my money. I will pay my lenders and leave the town,"

Earlier today, Kabali producer Thanu has responded to this claim of Kabali's loss preventing the producer from paying his dues and stated that  "Kabali grossed more than Rs. 13 crore in Chennai city alone. I even openly declared the collections through ads..This new controversy is targeted at Rajini sir's Kaala. Ultimately, truth will triumph..". The producer has also labelled Selvakumar as "not a distributor of Kabali but one of the witnesses who signed for the North Arcot player."
