Following theatre strike, Tamil movies fight Local Body Entertainment Tax (LBET)

Only yesterday we came to you with a report of national multiplexes like Inox and PVR Cinemas shutting down in strike against the Local Body Entertainment Tax at Chennai. Following this, the Tamil Nadu Producers' Council in a statement has announced that there will be no Tamil movie releases this Friday, to show their solidarity against the same double taxation.

While TFPC is deciding their next course of action today, both them and the Multiplexes Association of India (MAI) have received a huge token of support from the Producers Guild of India (PGI). President of PGI, Siddharth Roy Kapur has been quoted as saying,

“The decision of Tamil Nadu government to impose LBET to GST on cinema tickets is a highly retrograde step and the Producers Guild of India urges the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw this regressive tax at the earliest in the larger interests of all sectors of the Indian film industry.”
