Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thorae Review - A middling horror comedy!!!

Bharath Vijayakumar

SBKT is one of those films which does not understand its own strengths and tries to pack in something for everyone, only to fall apart towards the end. The film has an exciting start. Nothing out of the box but it delivers the chills. The twists are not something you haven't seen before but they work and you really do not see a few of them coming.

Director Ike's strong point is definitely comedy and with Soori in his elements the first half of SKBT is a definite winner. The jokes aren't new but they work. When capable comedians get their meter right it is always fun. There is a generous sprinkling  of adult humour. The good thing is that it is not the usual tactic of rhyming words denoting reproductive or excretory organs but a running joke revolving around washing clothes in a washing machine. Here washing and washing machine do not denote what you are thinking unless you have seen the film.

Despite all the above SKBT never comes together on the whole simply because it believes it has to tell a story. And the story which banks on emotions ends up being laughably insipid. The film literally comes to a halt once the flashback begins and the final comic stretch despite a few laughs keeps going on and on. Comedies more often than not run on wafer thin plots. But Ike wants us to invest in the story and keeps throwing emotional sequences that not only stick out but hardly have an impact.

One is not sure about the films Jiiva keeps choosing. SKBT is not a bad choice but you do wonder what his thought process is. He has been a part of quite a few comedies in the recent past. Pokkiri Raja, Kavalai Vendam and now this. Each one is quite different from the other but the actor also possibly needs to think on what these films are doing to him. He definitely is good in the lighthearted scenes but we have seen him do far better and it is time he gets into introspective mode and see if he is making the right career moves.

Bottomline:

A template horror comedy that works quite well but only till midway. The emotional core of the film is terribly pretentious.

Rating: 2.5/5
