Engitta Modhathey Review - An Okayish lightweight drama

Bharath Vijayakumar

Plot:

A drama woven around fan wars and cut-out artists.

Engitta Modhathey is one of those films that is normally termed as watchable. It has a rather routine plot but the scene of action chosen is an exciting one. Set in the late 80s, it takes us back to a period that probably saw the peak of the Rajni - Kamal fan rivalry. If you are one of those who caught films like Manithan, Nayagan, Sathya and Guru Sishyan in theatres this film could probably be a little nostalgic. There are multiple facets in the film. The thriving period of cut out artists, fan rivalry, friendship, love and political games. But director Ramu Velappa isn't interested in dwelling deep into any of these aspects. Each of these threads had enough potential for a riveting drama but everything is treated as a broad stroke.

For the film to have made a greater impact you should have felt the friendship between the two leads. But you hardly feel a vibe. It does not hurt the film too badly as after the initial 30 minutes you sort of get attuned to the lightweight manner in which everything is treated. The stakes are actually very high on paper but the makers seem to have made a conscious decision to not get too much into the emotional side of things. So it sort of works like a power point presentation where each slide has a key plot point but there is not much life in the proceedings. Even when things turn utterly serious the actors seem hardly fazed.

There might not be much to say about Natty's histrionic skills. But he does certainly have a presence and he chooses roles where this presence could help him sail through.

Bottomline:

Decent outing for a film which had a lot more potential. But it looks like a conscious decision from the makers to settle in the average league and play it safe.
