Plot:

Kattapava Kanom has a rather unusual plot for a Tamil film. It is basically about a lost fish and the men behind it.

The film plays out like a family friendly entertainer with almost no blood. But what it has in abundance is adult comedy. Every other scene has a reference to the female anatomy. Some of these dialogues are cleverly placed while most give you the feel of reading the jokes. They are there for the laughs but do not contribute to the plot. So you want to ask the makers 'Why not make a proper adult comedy?' if that is where their interest lies. A few more films like these and Tamil cinema can be proud of unearthing a new genre - the oxymoronic adult family entertainer!!! It should be interesting to see learn how the CBFC works. They probably refer only to one of Gandhi's three monkeys (the one with the eyes closed) while granting the certificate. You should not show things to children. Talking and listening is probably OK.

The film starts rather interestingly and most part of the first half works well like a low key comedy with a decent amount of laughs. But it gets stuck after a point and starts limping towards the end. Threads are just left midway. We are told Sibiraj is known for his bad luck and his father is superstitious. But his father is nowhere to be seen after the hero opts for a registered marriage against his wish. We have a little girl who plays a crucial role in the scheme of things. Then she loses importance midway. You really do not mind a lighthearted fun film which does not really follow a plot. But here we are allowed to grow on few characters and plot points and then they are conveniently forgotten or not closed properly.

Bottomline:

Kattapava Kanom has a few scattered laughs. But much like the fish, the film keeps getting lost in between these laughs.
