Maattrraan BoxOffice for Opening Weekend

Maattrraan took the top spot surging past all the Tamil movies released in the US and Canada from 2011 to 2012. Another accomplishment is Maattrraan occupied 21st rank in the North America box office over this weekend.

Despite closing with $309,000 and taking some top ranks, good is not good enough for Maattrraan since the bar has been set too high with US and Canada estimated distribution rights sold for roughly $400,000. The buying price was based on the assumption that the distributors were expecting Maattrraan to enter the magical Million dollar mark crossed only by Enthiran (Enthiran's opening collection still stands mighty tall at $2.16 Million for Tamil, Hindi and Telugu). 

Maattrraan's Box Office Break-up Numbers

Maattrraan did a total opening weekend collection of $309,000 (Rs 1.6 Crores) from 63 screens in USA and Canada. Further breaking it down, USA was $162,422 for opening weekend. The remaining collection coming from screens in Canada which is roughly the same size market as US. Brothers (Maattrraan Telugu) disappointed the US distributors with a opening weekend collection of only $15,700 from 28 screens (note: this number is not added to the Tamil BO collection of $309,000). Maattrraan was also higher than the other Hindi movie released this weekend -- Rani Mukherjee's Aiyaa which was able to collect only $39,500 from 25 screens.

Important Note: It is common practice among distributors all over the world to report lower BO number & tout losses to give negotiation power for next movie with the producers. So, please use your judgment to trust the numbers from distributors with a grain of salt.
