Box Office Update and 50 Day Hits

Box Office Update and 50 Day Hits

A number of movies hit key milestones this week. Vijay Antony's Naan and Attakathi genuinely completed 50 days in Chennai while Santhanam's OKOK completed 175 days. Salman's Ek Tha Tiger, One of the highest grossers of all time in Indian cinema, also completed 50 days.

Naan is currently running in two screens and Attakathi in just one screen (note: theatres shown in Studio Greens Attakathi 50th day ads are fake, as usual). OKOK completed 175 days in Udhay Stalin's favourite small screen Devi Kala where the movie is running one show a day. Bilingual Naan Ee entered 90 days in 2 screens and expected to hit 100 days in a couple of weeks.

Thaandavam

Thaandavam is the 2nd highest opening BO revenue for a Tamil movie this year in the US and Canada market collecting a total of $130,000. However, Thandavam's collection was disappointingly low in the UK market with gross collection of just GBP 40,520 in 17 screens despite the movie being extensively shot in London and with one of the key characters, Nasser, enacting the role of a Srilankan Tamil.

In domestic markets, Cricket matches have eaten into the share of Tamil movies Box-Office collections as many of the Sunday shows in multiplexes were cancelled due to lack of admittance. Even after trimming 9 minutes, Thaandavam's mixed reviews have affected the Box Office prospects as the collections are luke-warm in multiplexes and single screens.

Sundarapandian, Saattai, and Charulatha

Sasikumar's Sundarapandian still doing respectable business at reduced number of screens (30% drop in screens from week 2). Saattai also registered moderate drop in shows (~35% drop) compared to first week; thanks to positive reviews by Vikatan (44/100) and other print media. Widely released Charulatha fell the sharpest in terms of collections registering a steep drop of ~90% from week 1.

Upcoming Movie of the Week

English Vinglish (Aangilam Vaangilam) has good level of buzz and is expected to open in large number of screens primarily due to Ajith's cameo, Sridevi's return and well-focused promotional efforts.
