Suriya voices his support for Regional Films

Suriya Chief Guest at IFFI Closing Ceremony

Suriya was the chief guest at the concluding ceremony of the 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at Goa. Suriya voiced support for regional films which doesn't get enough attention like the Hindi film Industry (Bollywood).

The regional film industry majorly comprises of the films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Gujarathi, Tulu, Konkani, Assamese which constitute for more than 80% of films made in India every year. It is indeed very sad that this majority of these movies are not properly recognized in film festivals like the IIFA & IFFI. Suriya mentioned that the Kolaveri song is more than enough to show the potential that the regional cinema has got as this song was played in every radio station across India and also in BBC FM at United Kingdom.

He says that the West thinks that Indian Cinema is all about Bollywood and that isn't fair. He finally concludes by saying that the multiplexes should show regional cinema with English subtitles. With nearly 50 percent of India living in urban areas and knowing to speak English, regional cinema can reach a bigger market across the country.
