'Expectations Were Minimal': Karuppiah C Ram Calls Youth's Rs.50 Cr Run a Bonus

Producer Karuppiah C Ram delivered a detailed and heartfelt speech at the Youth thanksgiving meet, tracing the film’s journey from inception to its current success and crediting every individual who played a role in its growth.

Opening his speech, Karuppiah said that everything about Youth happened “in a snap” — from signing director Ken Karunaas to standing on stage at the thanksgiving meet. He first expressed gratitude to financiers Malvi and Manvi, who were among the earliest to back the project, along with several others who extended support along the way. He also thanked his well-wishers who helped take the film to Netflix and aided in expanding its business prospects, while noting that Vijay TV showed strong faith in the film.

He went on to reveal how the film’s reach expanded beyond Tamil Nadu. During the Chennai shoot of Dulquer Salmaan’s I’m Game, a connection through a friend led the Youth team to meet the actor, resulting in a wide release in Kerala. Similarly, despite being a relatively unknown team in the Telugu market, the film has managed to register strong numbers there as well.

Speaking about the cast, Karuppiah shared that Suraj Venjaramoodu has now become a close friend, recalling how he has followed the actor’s Malayalam films for years, even watching his releases on the first day at Palazzo. He described Suraj as a highly versatile performer. He also referred to the film’s three heroines as his “sisters” and thanked Devadarshini and Nalini for their constant support, adding that they would often check on him by asking, “Happy ah?” — to which he now confidently says he is.

Despite the film’s commercial success, Karuppiah noted that the team deliberately chose to host a thanksgiving meet instead of a success celebration. “Thanking people is permanent, success is temporary,” he said. He also revealed that the film was initially planned on a modest scale, targeting a release across 150–200 screens. Even when announcing the March 19 release date alongside bigger films, their expectations remained minimal. Crossing ₹50 crore, he said, has come as a bonus.

Sharing his philosophy as a producer, Karuppiah stressed that a director needs to be in a positive and comfortable mindset to deliver their best work. He praised Ken Karunaas for remaining unchanged throughout the journey, recalling how emotional he was right from the pooja stage. After completing the shoot, Ken had told him, “We finished the film just the way we planned. No one trusted us, only we trusted each other.”

He added that while the team initially expected around 2,000 viewers, the film has now reached lakhs of people, and he hopes it soon touches crores. Karuppiah also spoke about starting his banner, Paarvathaa Entertainment, with the intention of supporting directors’ visions.

Addressing a common question about what he gifted Ken after the film’s success, Karuppiah revealed that the real gesture was made much earlier — at the scripting stage itself. He said he had set up “Street Boy Studios” for Ken and made him a partner in the film with a share in the profits.

He further invited aspiring filmmakers to approach his production house, sharing that scripts can be submitted via scripts@paarvathaa, where a team reviews and identifies promising talent.

On the film’s promotions, Karuppiah said they did not attempt anything unconventional but followed standard PR strategies effectively. He concluded by thanking his promotional team, digital partners, in-house members, and media, specifically mentioning key contributors who played a major role in taking Youth to a wider audience and sustaining its momentum.
