Woodlands Theater Vs Red Giant Movies: What is happening?

Maamannan is a Tamil movie lead and produced by DMK MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin. The movie was Udhayanidhi's last film as an actor and was released by his own banner Red Giant Movies in June 2023. Shortly before this film could hit theater screens owner of Chennai based Woodlands Theater/Woodlands Cinemas raked up a mini storm in the Tamil film circle. Venkatesan who is also a lawyer had alleged that despite laws being in place for the distributors share to not exceed 60% of the theater revenue, several banners had made it a norm to demand upto 70% share, reducing the exhibitors income from 40% to 30%.

Venkatesan said this practice was being extended to mid and small sized films as well, leading to a loss for theaters owners like him. He had also said that the Tamil Nadu Theater Owners And Multiplex Association was doing nothing to intervene or stop this malpractice. All these claims were made via an Whatsapp audio note, and it had been widely shared at that time. The timing of the grievances had lead many to believe Red Giant Movies was the banner Venkatesan was talking about.

Red Giant Movies is also a major distribution player in Tamil Nadu. Supposedly ever since the voice note, movies releasing via Red Giant Movies are not being given to Woodland theater. After Maamannan, Red Giant Movies presented the recent Sivakarthikeyan release Maaveeran, and both films were not screened at the well-recognized theater in Chennai. Seemingly films presented via Red Giant Movies are up for grabs only with a distribution-exhibitor share of 70: 30, a ratio being strongly resisted to by Woodland theater.
