Actor Suriya, wife Jyotika and a few other members of team Soorarai Pottru were at New Delhi today to receive the National Film Award they had won for their 2020 film from Indian President Droupadi Murmu. At such events, it is customary for the award receivers to show up in a formal attire and there have only been a handful of instances when the Veshti - a traditional South Indian male attire was represented at that National stage.

Suriya is the latest personality from the Tamil film industry to receive his award donning a veshti. Previously actors Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi and music composer D. Imman had donned the white dhoti, which is also a symbol of their Tamil roots. [Others usually show up in other Indian/western formal attires].
While Suriya received the Best actor award for Soorarai Pottru, wife Jyotika received the medal for Soorarai Pottru's best film award. Writer, director Sudha Kongara, actress Aparna Balamurali also received medals for Best director and Best actress - female respectively. Composer GV Prakash received the National Film medal for Best music for Soorarai Pottru. [Video Compilation Here]
