Madras HC questions KP Selvah, City Court on Bigil Plagiarism Case! Clears Film For Diwali Release!

The legal hurdles over plagiarism accusations on Vijay's Bigil might be a thing of the past, for the Madras High Court's hearing of the case on Thursday cleared the way for the film's release this Diwali. If one may recall, an AD named KP Selvah had moved Madras city civil court earlier this year, alleging that he had been working on a script with woman's football team as the theme (same as Bigil) and had shared a 75 page soft-copy of the same with one of the mutual friends he shared with Atlee (director of Bigil).

For some reason, KP Selvah withdrew his complaint from the lower court in August this year and AGS Entertainment had even publicized this as 'a win for Bigil' [KP Selvah later called out AGS on the same and had said that he intends to pursue the case in High Court].

This plagiarism case gained prominence once again when the Madras High Court on Tuesday ordered for the producers of Bigil to submit their side and K.P. Selvah the evidence in connection with his claims. A hearing for the same was held today and Justice R Suresh Kumar, the presiding judge seemed more focused on the 'doubts in legal procedures' rather than the merits of the case itself.

The Justice told KP Selvah that he had 'committed a blunder by not referring anything about copyright infringement in his plaint before City Civil Court' and questioned the lower court on allowing the AD to withdraw his suit without coming to a verdict on the defendant's [AGS Entertainment, Atlee's] plea to reject it. He has also announced that a verdict on whether or not the Madras City Civil Court was right in their procedures alone would be heard next week.

This is being seen as a clearance for Bigil's release on October 25, 2019 as the plagiarism case details will not be looked into any further by the High Court.
