MeToo India: Director Rajkumar Hirani gets accused of sexual assault!

After a two-month investigation, Huff Post India has published a detailed article on how an assistant director of the Hindi film Sanju accused director Rajkumar Hirani of sexual assault and how it was dealt by those closely working with him. Up until the allegations, Hirani was a name to be reckoned with in Bollywood, having given mega blockbuster hits like the Munnabhai series, 3 IdiotsPK and Sanju.

The survivor has accused Hirani of sexually assaulting her on more than one occasion between March, 2018 and September, 2018 and she had complained about the same in an email to Hirani's co-producer on Sanju Vidhu Vinod Chopra, his wife and film journalist Anupama Chopra (Film Companion), Hirani's co-writer on almost all his films Abhijat Joshi and director Shelly Chopra Dhar, whose film Hirani was co-producing at that time.

The Chopras are said to have come in support of the survivor but since she is an employee of Hirani's Rajkumar Hirani Films, the ICC at Vinod Chopra Films (VCF) couldn't conduct a direct investigation.

Meanwhile Rajkumar Hirani has denied these allegations and has said in the media, “I was completely shocked when these allegations were brought to my notice about two months back. I had suggested immediately that it is essential to take this matter to any committee or any legal body. The complainant has chosen to go to the media instead. I want to very strongly state that this is a false malicious and mischievous story being spread with the sole intention of destroying my reputation.”

It is worth mentioning here that Rajkumar Hirani's name has been dropped as co-producer from Shelly Chopra Dhar's Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga since and even Fox Star India, which is one of the producers of Hirani's upcoming projects has said, "In a meeting in late December, it was decided that Fox would pull the plug on Munna Bhai 3 if Hirani was found guilty. The studio stands in solidarity with the survivor,”
