Sarkar Story Controversy: A.R. Murugadoss, K. Bhagyaraj have a war of words!

Last week, we had reported about how the South Indian Film Writers' Association declared that the story of Vijay's upcoming movie Sarkar is very similar to one Varun Rajendran's Sengol and that the latter has moved High Court demanding credit in the title card and Rs. 30 lakh as compensation. The Madras High Court will be hearing the case tomorrow i.e. October 30, 2018, though it has not withheld the release of Sarkar which is on November 6, 2018.

What ideally should be termed as a plagiarism row has now turned into a war of words between the director of Sarkar A.R. Murugadoss and head of the South Indian Film Writers Association, K. Bhagyaraj. A quick look into the statements made on both ends:

A.R. Murugadoss  (Full Interview Here)

  • I did not even submit my bound script..What the association took was a synopsis (which contains the core story sans the complete screenplay) of my bound script.. I told them I will show my film but they didn't see it..Passing a verdict after reading just the synopsis of my bound script is the biggest punishment one could give me..You have read the full script of the other side (Varun Rajendran)..Shouldn't you have read my complete script as well?
  • My story has political happenings of 2018. It has a Google like company CEO, Twiter pages, Facebook Live and I've taken a film covering our Cm's death and other current scenarios...How can a story formed 11 years back be similar to mine? The only similarity between two stories is both our Heroes' vote is used by someone else.
  • The committee which decided on this matter had 6 people saying the stories are different, 5 people saying the stories are same and 2 saying they can't decide if they are same.
  • Varun Rajendran claims that he had narrated the story to his friend Suriya Kiran in the presence of 'Stills' Vijay who has worked with me in 3 films. It is his idea that the story would have reached me through 'stills' vijay but he was never called for investigation. He was only spoken to over the phone.
  • K. Bhagyaraj issued a letter without even consulting other members of the committee or reading it to them. Both Suriya Kiran (as child artiste) and Varun Rajendran (as assistant director) have worked with Bhagyaraj before and this seems like a one-sided take on this whole issue.
  • If Bhagyaraj feels the one-line of Sarkar and Sengol are same, then what about his own film Chinna Veedu (1985) which shared the same story as Gopurangal Saivathillai (1982).
  • It is with every Vijay movie that I face such issues because when there is a big star involved, people want to bank on or benefit from his popularity.

  • The claim that I have not read the bound script is twisted..I can only read what has been submitted..It was his (A.R. Murugadoss') claim that this (synopsis) is the story that has been registered and that the movie was made on it. Moreover, even before I could flip through those 20 pages, he himself narrated the story to me and I made it very clear that story theft is not being claimed here but only copyright infringement.
  • Varun Rajendran's story is a hero finds his vote is missing, he fights by moving court, the election gets cancelled, enmity with a politician begins, then reelection comes and the hero himself now contests and wins and gets a chance to become a CM. whether or not he becomes a CM is the rest of the story. From the outline to the way the film travels, there were similarities with Sarkar. If we go into the treatment of the film or the dialogues, then it becomes the screen-play and not the story and every director will have a different one.
  • I can openly challenge this statement because we keep a record called the minutes book (at the association).. I think Murugadoss has been wrongly informed of the committee's  happenings. If I release those records now, what will he do?
  • Registrations and patents are provided by law to protect the interests of writers when one or more of them come with the same inspiration. Varun Rajendran is a struggling assistant director who happened to come up with a story 11 years ago.. So from the beginning I approached it as a matter of copyright rather than story theft..Infact I find using that very word very disrespectful to everyone involved which is why bringing 'Stills' Vijay for an investigation was avoided.
  • I gave the letter to Rajendran for submitting it as a part of the court's proceedings. I have no clue as to how the last page of the letter came about in the media. I am seen even talking about this whole issue in the media only because people started questioning me about the authenticity of the letter.
  • How is Suriya Kiran and him working as a child artiste in my movies even relevant in this issue? Throughout this whole thing, we haven't met or even spoken over the phone. It is being claimed that Varun Rajendran assisted me 10 years ago in one of my TV shows..If he did where has he been credited?
  • It has been years since both the movies released and all this is being said just for the sake of saying something. It was director Selvamani who had made this point in writing while arguing for Sarkar's case in the committee. Murugadoss knowing so much in detail about the committee's activities should have something to do with this I guess (laughs).
  • When the release of our favorite star's film comes under questions, it is natural for fans to get bitter..And people are of the assumption that I am benefiting through all this whereas the reality is I have only received brickbats from everyone around me including my own family.. I have more to loose than I have to gain..

While both Varun Rajendran and A.R. Murugadoss have had support from their co-workers and friends, actor Vijay on the other hand has claimed to have not known of such a development till K. Bhagyaraj had called and informed him. Vijay is said to have assured Bhagyaraj to have no qualms about taking the required steps as Murugadoss was confident of taking the matter up in court.
