Will Vijay's Sarkar break even or make a profit with high stakes riding on it?

Vijay's Sarkar is definitely one of the hugely anticipated film in Kollywood. The film is gearing up for Diwali release and the expectations of this movie are sky high. The film has done phenomenal pre-release business next to Superstar Rajinikanth and the rights have been sold for highest rates ever for the actor. Sarkar worldwide theatrical rights is estimated to be around Rs. 125-130 cr which is more than his previous blockbuster Mersal which was sold for Rs. 110+ crore.

Sarkar pre-release business

Sarkar bankrolled by Sun Pictures has been made on a budget of Rs. 100 cr on a first copy basis. Thenandal Films who earlier produced Mersal have acquired the worldwide distribution rights of the film for around Rs. 100 cr. The production house has made a profit of Rs. 30+ cr even before the film's release through theatrical and audio rights.

Thenandal Studios - Rs. 100 cr

Hindi Dubbing & Satellite rights - Rs. 24 cr

Audio rights - Rs. 3 cr

Tamil Digital & Satellite rights - Sun Network

Thenandal Studios who acquired the rights for worldwide distribution rights has made a business of Rs. 125-130 cr through sales of distribution rights across territories for a record price compared to his previous films. The factors quoted for the record sales of the film is firstly the popularity and stardom of Vijay, secondly the huge success of his last outing Mersal and thirdly being a Diwali festival release.

Here is the area-wise break-up of pre-release business:

Tamil Nadu - Rs. 75+ Cr

Kerala - Rs. 8 cr

Karnataka - Rs. 8 cr

AP / TG - Rs. 6 cr

ROI - Rs. 2 cr

Overseas - Rs. 25 cr

Will Sarkar achieve break even or make a profit?

The next big question in the trade circle is will the film break even or make a profit with high stakes riding on it. Making a film which has a budget of more than Rs 100 crores is always going to be big risk, not just for the producers, but also for the distributors and exhibitors involved in the film’s release. In this case, with producers already having made a huge profit, the entire pressure has now shifted to the shoulders of the distributors and exhibitors to recover their investment.

The film has to make around Rs. 120-130+ crore business in Tamil Nadu alone to achieve break even which is very close to the business made by the biggest blockbuster Baahubali 2. According to the trade, the extended opening weekend of 6 days (Tuesday - Sunday) is very crucial for the film to rake in the moolah at the Box Office. Also, it has to perform extremely well in every region it releases to make a good profit.

We hope the film does well at the box office and creates new records as well as it is carrying a good pre-release hype even before its release.
