Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga Review - Packs a Few Laughs

by Bharath Vijayakumar

Pasanga fame Pandiraj’s latest venture ‘Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga’ (KBKR) is a light hearted film that tries to get serious only towards the climax. Pandiraj seems to have taken the path that was mastered by V.Sekhar. A sugar coated entertainer that wants to deliver a message, KBKR manages to get past the finish line despite a few hiccups.

Plot

The movie is about two wastrels who do not want to break a sweat but still dream about making it big. They take things for granted and hardly realize the love of their parents, which strikes them only after a tragic incident. The film also tracks their romantic interludes.

Cast

Sivakarthikeyan is the key for a film such as KBKR to click. It is home ground for him and he does not disappoint. His timing of the one liners and his expertise in mimicry manage to keep the laughs on. His footwork in the song sequences is also noteworthy. Vimal once again proves that the rural or semi urban youth roles come easily to him. He too does his part well.

Soori , the comedian who is fast on the rise is adequate. One does feel he could have been given more scope. The heroines Bindhu Madhavi and Regina are pretty. The Siva - Regina track seems more believable and grounded while the Vimal – Bindhu track that tries to be funny seems silly at times. Director Manoj comes up with a restrained portrayal as Sivakarthikeyan’s father.

Music and Direction

Yuvan has pretty much delivered the requirements of the film. The bar song crooned by STR is foot tapping. The BGM is neat.

KBKR  has laughs sprinkled all over it. Most of them work and this should ensure that the film clicks with the masses. Pandiraj needs to be credited for keeping the melodramatic quotient within tolerable limits in the climax. But the scene where the hero explicitly writes “My Father is My Hero” on his father’s photograph is like literally spoon feeding the audience and has a drama feel about it. Most of the film is like a collection of comedy scenes put together. While the first half is enjoyable and moves fast the later half does test your patience at a few places.  While you cannot find out any glaring mistake with the film you also can’t help but feel that the film could have been better than what it is.

Bottomline

KBKR is not a classic. It knows its purpose and almost succeeds in achieving it. It is definitely a watchable fun flick this summer.
