Tamizh Padam 2 Songs Review - A Surprisingly Brilliant Soundtrack for a Spoof Film

Tamil Padam 2 Songs - Music Review

C.S.Amudhan's directorial Tamizh Padam is heading up for its sequel which to many like me, is the most anticipated film of 2018. The soundtrack of the film has dropped today. 9 songs that doesn't spare a chance to make fun of the conventional song situations and lyric patterns we all grow up with and unfortunately still forced to buy as viral hits. It is composed with great efforts.. singers have done an amazing job.. lyrics are made out of heavy research work.. unlike how all this happens upside down in most of our mainstream film music these days.

Ulagam adhira vaada! - A ramping parody on Vivegam's 'Veriyera.. Vidhi maara..' is all orchestral! What would have made millions have goosebumps in theatres in a mass film turns insanely hilarious here when it ends on the note 'Arrogaraa! Shiva'!

'Aadhaaramaanaai' - a melancholic number with an alluring female voice was too good! For seconds.. I was like WOW! But then it ring to me, it is made out of 'Jeevanadhi' of Baahubali.

'Evadaa unna pethaa' - A gift to all the feminists.. A number that calls out men with names.. comprising both #Adidaa of Selvaraghavan films, 'Enna Sunday, Mondaykku love pannanum?' of Simbu lyric culture stylistically freetunes between lyrics and hummings. It questions soceital issues like acid victims but also hits at the beaten to death characterisations of heroines, created to redempt our heroes. It ends with a female Devadas note wishing all goodness to the man despite him leaving. And we hear a word ushered at the end. What's that? 'Samarpanam' of Vaazhve Maayam!

'En Nadanam' - Structured out of heavy dance numbers from 80s like Kaadhal Oviyam's 'Sangeedha Jaadhimullai' & Salangai Oli's 'Naadha vinodhangal' puts you to laughter even as it begins with heavy intensity and seriousness given you start imagining what and how Shiva will be reacting to all this! The 'Menagai - Urvasi' reference that was mandatory in all 80's bharathanatyam number is there. Just when you think this is the extreme.. wait for the replication of Yagana lyrics of Sangeedha Jaadhimullai at the end!

'Naan yaarumilla', the twin brother of 'Pacha Manja Sivappu Tamizhanda' in TamizhPadam, released couple of days back as a video came up with zillion of knocks to the mass masala intro songs we are used to. It begins with the women chorusing 'Tsunaamiyin Binaamiye' and buggles up with heavy guitars rimming hero confessing that he is no one and possesses no mass, no velocity and is no good basically. The lyrics satires both heroes being over heroic and being silent when they could make a statement. A lyric even goes as 'Naan TVlerndhu vandhavan da!'. But the chuckle buster is when one line comes up as "Idhu thaanaa serndha koottam illa. Ellaam Junior Artist!"

'Vaa Vaa Kaama.. Ingu yaar dhaan raama?' by Ujjayinee Roy highly reminds many of mid 80s seduction tracks by Ilayaraja. The song has the sensuality of Vikram's 'Meendum Meendum Vaa!'.. the subtle eroticism of Michael MadhanaKaamarajan's 'Shivaraathiri'. The lyrics also hold the agmark 80s line.. 'Kodi vitta ilammottu thudikka..' Even if the entire song fails to spell you the reminiscence of 80s.. the 'Sallaabane' near end surely is a vintage vamp.

'Kalavarame' does appeal a lot like a take on Harris Jayaraj phase between 2008 - 2015. Like 'Nenjil Nenjil..' or 'Theeyillai' of Engeyum Kaadhal / 'Vaaraayo' of Aadhavan / 'Oorelllaam unnai kandu' of 'Nanbenda'.. Chinmayi compensates for the carnatic romance Bombay Jayashree used to ooze out in all her tracks with HJ. The track has a gibberish line as well and she nails it all the way!

'Chella Penne' - A guitar detour is probably the only song that's quite out of the parody zone. It has an indie feel to it.. a lingering melody caressed with vocals of .

All said and done, My pick from the album is Phoenix Paravai! Not because we know who this is pointed out at.. It stretches over a spectrum from K.B.Sundarambaal's Pazham Neeyappaa to Shiva's parody times where memes are a sensation.. but it also effortlessly holds a 'Idho adhu nammai nokki varugiradhu!'

Bottom Line

Despite being a spoof.. TamizhPadam 2's album is probably the most innovative soundtrack to come out of Tamil Cinema in a very long time. It basically works for 3 reasons. One - The music is brilliant. Two - The lyrics are funny. Three - You imagine Shiva's face as you keep listening to every track.
