Sun TV turns 25: Revisiting the memory lane of most popular Tamil channel

When it comes to the Television brigade in Tamil Nadu, Sun TV has been a comrade in the last two plus decades. From being the only Tamil colour Television channel with high resolution visuals (as it was the first Tamil Satellite channel in the world) to being the most popular Tamil channel for over a decade, Sun TV brought everything to the viewer's living room- movies, songs, addictive daily soaps, audience interactive shows, reality Television and what not. Sun TV also proudly shared the blame for being the reason behind the plethora of soap operas at one point, that had viewers (especially homemakers and senior citizens) hooked to their TV sets. In the spirit of Tamil New Year and the brand celebrating 25 years, we take a look at Kalanithi Maran owned Sun TV's journey.

The network's twitter handle has already been taking us up and down memory lane; from the introductory tune used during the early days of the channel, to Pepsi Ungal Choice (that made Uma, the anchor a household name and synonymous with the soft-drink Pepsi), Vijayasarathy hosted Neengal Kaeta Paadal (people even remember the show's sponsor Nescafe till date), Sapthaswarangal (first ever talent-hunt show), Visuvin Arattai Arangam, Comedy Time with Mayilswami and much more, SUN TV was truly one of the pioneers of taking entertainment to Tamil homes. Aslo India’s first private TV to broadcast news and live Television, Sun TV contributed heaps to Television culture growing up.

What started off as a flagship Tamil channel, it kept up with the growing trends, diversifying into print media (daily Dinakaran (bought in 2005), weekly magazine Kunkumam being the most popular among those owned), Radio stations (Suryan FM & Red FM), film production (Sun Pictures), IPL cricket team (Sunrisers Hyderabad), airlines (SpiceJet) and more recently the digital platform with the Sun Nxt App. The network has only grown from milestone to milestone but even today the brand stands tall in the Television industry with over 33 channels, catering to all South Indian Languages.
