Critic Favourite Tamil Movie Award - 2012

VOTE for your 2012's Critic Favourite Tamil Movie

2012 has been a break-through year for Tamil films. Many small budget films made with limited budgets have emerged as winners and were able to stand up against big releases purely based on the merit of its content and not star power. The three main reasons attributed to the emergence of small budget movies are,

  • The production cost is greatly reduced as the expensive film rolls are now being replaced by shooting in digital cameras. The post-production work also becomes easier when the movie is shot with a digital camera.
  • The proliferation of digital screening has made it easier to increase the number of shows and screens within short notice and without the burden of cost accrued in making physical prints. It is reported that roughly 600 screens in Tamil Nadu have digital projections.
  • Word of mouth has played a huge role in the success of these movies. Ubiquity of mobile devices and social media networks have played a big role in determining the fate of the movie after the first show.

Many short film-makers like Balaji Mohan and Karthik Subbaraj were able to make their impressions on the big screen this year. Digital cameras have given the film-makers more freedom and opportunity to experiment more. Some of the important films that were shot during digital cameras are Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi, Vazhakku Enn 18/9, Pizza and Attakathi.

Note: Due to immense popularity of "Pizza" among both critics and public, it is categorized under popular movies (along with Thuppakki, Nanban, OKOK, Maattrraan, Billa-2, Thaandavam, Mugamoodi, etc.). Voting for popular movies  will be published after the last week of December.
