Paagan Movie Review

‘Paagan’ raises your eyebrows right at the beginning, when you discover that this movie would move forward from the point of view of a bicycle. Debutant director Aslam, an erstwhile assistant of Ameer, has tried to give a decent family entertainer. But, the sluggish screenplay and plenty of old fashioned sequences make him miss his goal, by quite some distance.

The Plot

Subramani (Srikanth) is a struggling youngster who tries every business possible but always ends up incurring losses. Pandi and Soori play his friends and are seen throughout the movie. Then, Subramani, decides to marry a rich girl Mahalakshmi (Janani Iyer) in order to acquire her wealth. Will he succeed in his endeavor? This story is narrated by his bicycle.

Performances

Srikanth is searching for a solo hit for quite some time now.  After his appreciable performance in ‘Nanban’, he has taken up this film. Srikanth fits the bill in the role of an aspiring businessman. He could have done better in the emotional sequences though. Janani Iyer, who was last seen in ‘Avan Ivan’, does not create any huge impact. In fact, her characterization is the weakest link in the movie.

Pandi and Soori provide the comic relief in the first half and they try to make the movie entertaining. Soori scores with his body language while Pandi scores with his dialogue delivery. Kovai Sarala, who plays Srikanth’s mother, looks convincing in her character. But, some of her loud dialogues might annoy you.

Technicalities

Music by James Vasanthan is pretty average. The songs are not catchy enough and they often hamper the flow of the movie. The background score just passes muster. Lakshman could have done a better job as a cinematographer as the scenes do not appeal visually. Editor Kevin should have trimmed the length of the movie. The movie seems to be endless and drags a lot.

Director

Director Aslam has come out with a novel idea of making a bicycle to narrate the story. But, the idea of giving a voice to the cycle looks pretty obsolete. And, many of the scenes are clichéd and predictable. If the director had concentrated more on the screenplay, the movie could have been an enjoyable outing.

Bottomline

Paagan starts on a promising note, but the cycle chain falls off very soon.
