Kamal Haasan Backs Vijay Amid Oath Ceremony Delay - Cites SR Bommai Judgement

Actor and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan has extended his support to chief minister-elect Vijay following the postponement of his oath-taking ceremony. The ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, was put on hold after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar rejected Vijay's request for a green signal, citing doubts over TVK's ability to prove a majority.

In a detailed note on X, Kamal Haasan stressed that Tamil Nadu has witnessed a hung Assembly for the first time in its history and that the people's mandate must be respected. He appreciated MK Stalin for gracefully accepting the result and committing to serve as a responsible opposition. Crucially, Kamal cited the landmark SR Bommai judgement — asserting that majority must be tested on the Assembly floor and not at the Raj Bhavan — and urged constitutional authorities to invite Vijay to form the government.

Vijay's TVK won 108 seats in the elections, with the leader himself winning from both Trichy East and Perambur. He is expected to retain Perambur and resign from Trichy East, triggering a by-election for that constituency. TVK currently needs five more seats to prove majority — a gap that appears to have been bridged with the Indian National Congress agreeing to ally with TVK, bringing five additional seats to the table.
