Jana Nayagan starring Vijay in the lead is a Tamil action thriller that is scheduled to release on January 9, 2026 as the actor's last film before his entry in politics. The CBFC threw a last-minute curveball for the film, citing that one of the censor board members on the film examining committee was dissatisfied with certain depictions, and since his colleagues—the other four members—did not agree to his objections, he lodged a complaint with the office of the CBFC chairman Prasoon Joshi.
Jana Nayagan was therefore forwarded for further examination by a revising committee, based on Prasoon Joshi's authority to do so, under Rule 23(14) either suo moto or upon complaint. This put Jana Nayagan's January 9 release in a limbo, and makers KVN Productions took the legal route of challenging CBFC's unorthodox move.
A Madras High Court hearing was held on January 7, 2026 (Tuesday), but the judge reserved orders not citing a specific date on when the decision on this case would be delivered. If a court decision isn't out by January 8, 2026 (Wednesday), then Jana Nayagan might likely get postponed.
Notably, it was revealed during the court hearing the one of the reasons why the complaint was raised is because Jana Nayagan has used certain emblems of the Indian defence forces without consultation from experts, which is procedural and mandatory as per the Indian government. It is also worth mentioning here that the H Vinoth directed Jana Nayagan is an official remake of the National Award winning Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari (2023), written and directed by Anil Ravipudi.

Update: KVN Productions has officially announced that Jana Nayagan is now postponed, and that the new Jana Nayagan release date will be 'announced at the earliest'.
