For a while now, it has been suggested that Ajith starrer Thunivu and Vijay starrer Varisu, both highly anticipated Tamil films will be clashing at the Pongal box-office in January, 2023. Latest update on this scenario is that both movies are releasing a day apart. 

Popular Tamil Nadu distributor Tirupur Subramaniam has stated in a Vikatan interview that Thunivu which is directed by H. Vinoth, and produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor will be releasing first on January 12 i.e. Thursday. Varisu which is also releasing in Telugu as Vaarasudu, will be hitting theater screens the next day i.e. January 13, 2023. 

An official announcement on these mentioned release dates is however awaited. Directed by Tollywood's Vamshi Paidipally and produced by the Telugu banner Sri Venkateswara Creations, Varisu is a multi-starrer family entertainer with SS Thaman for music.

Thunivu is a heist action thriller that recently wrapped shooting at Bangkok. The film has Ghibran for music and co-stars Manju Warrier, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, Samuthirakani among others.
