For years now, Tamil channel Sun TV has remained an undisputed TRP king when it comes to daily soaps and serials. But the COVID-19 situation which brought serial productions to a stand-still for all Television channels might have played a role in changing this TRP game.

In the latest impression ranking released by Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), India it can be seen that Sun TV's rival channel STAR Vijay has taken the top spot for TRPs in terms of TV Serials. The soap Bharathi Kannamma has registered 82,54,000 impressions between September 12, 2020 and September 18, 2020 and the TRP impressions higher than that have only been registered by movie airings. 

Sun TV's decline in serial TRPs is attributed to two reasons 1. Due to COVID-19, only local actors are employed in filming of new episodes which has lead to some major casting changes in famous serials 2. Some serials have gone ahead and brought in a story-shift due to this casting problem which may not have gelled well with the audience as yet. (eg. Nayagi, Kalyana Veedu)

And with serials like Bharathi Kannamma finding a new set of audience and STAR Vijay coming up with tough TRP competitors like Bigg Boss staring October, it would be interesting to watch Sun TV's play in gaining its top spot back.
