Did you know? Vijay's Mass Airport Scene in Mersal is inspired from Ocean of Pearls!

The quarantine binge watching brigade on the internet recently revisited one of the much-spoken about scenes from Vijay starrer Mersal, a 2017 movie directed by Atlee. The said scene features Vijay landing in Paris in a traditional South Indian 'Veshti' (a garment men drape themselves in instead of pants), only for the airport security to stop and examine him. However, when someone at the airport falls unconscious due to choking, Vijay who reveals himself to be a doctor to opens the air duct with a broken credit card and a straw.

This scene is actually inspired from a 2008 indie film called Ocean of Pearls (writen and directed by Sarabh Neelam) when an Sardar doctor (played by Omid Abtahi) undergoes similar circumstances because of his 'unique' turban in a non-Indian airport. While most of the netizens seem to have known the film's connection to Mersal, some were amused to have this added to their lockdown era learnings.
