Pahlaj Nihalani Vs CBFC: FCAT clears Rangeela Raja with 3 Cuts!

If you follow Bollywood news, you would know of the epic battle that went down between the Prasoon Joshi lead CBFC and former CBFC Chief Pahlaj Nihalani, with respect to the latter's production venture Rangeela Raja.

CBFC famously ordered 20 cuts (only 14 of them were actual cuts, the remaining 6 were orders for disclaimers and AWBI certificate) and an A certificate, after which Nihalani took the matter to Bombay High Court which in-turn directed him to The Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT).

After a bit of struggle, the FCAT today released its decision by retaining 3 of the actual 14 cuts and the original 6 orders regarding AWBI certificate, extending CBFC certificate space time and the anti-smoking statutory warning. It also issued the film an U/A instead of an A.

The details of the 3 actual cuts were summarized  by the FCAT (full summary here) as follows:

  • 'Haay itna ras bhara..ahista ahista kholna' (It is so juicy..open it slowly slowly): It is abundantly clear from the above dialogue that the reference is not to 'Ghevar' as a dish (as claimed by Nihalani) but to a virgin girl. the said excision in a UA film is fully justified and retained.

  • 'Tu aisa swadisht khana Khila chuki hai' (You have fed me such tasty food before): The words tend to glorify forced sex inflicted on the woman by calling it a delicious meal and deserve to be excised.

  • Thee scene of caressing the buttocks and saying that they are so soft and why they are so soft is objectionable and deserves to be deleted.

Rangeela Raja, starring Govinda in a double role, was meant to release last month but did not because of this long-drawn certification issue. The film will now hit theater screens on January 11, 2019.
