Movies This Week: Chennai theatres overflow with options

 

This week is truly flooded with movie options from all languages for Chennai theatres have multiple movie releases in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and English. Here is a quick look at what movies are there and how they have fared well with the critics and audience. 
 
Sema (Tamil)
A light-hearted entertainer, GV Prakash starrer Sema is a tried and tested rural based story that makes for a decent watch this summer vacation. Our detailed review of this film can be viewed here

Oru Kuppai Kathai (Tamil)
A movie about mis-matched dreams, Oru Kuppai Kathai revolves around the staring marriage of Kumar and Poongodi (played by the lead pair) and is said to be emotionally engaging. One of the films this week to have grabbed a lot of attention, Oru Kuppai Kathai would definitely be in our recommendation list to watch this weekend. KaalaKoothu (Tamil) 
Starring Sai Dhansika, Prasanna, Kalaiarasan and Srushti Dane, Kaalakoothu is a tale of friendship and love, another tried and tested genre but the film passes off for a decent emotional drama and a one-time watch.
 
Abhiyum Anuvum/ Abhiyude Kadha Anuvinteyum (Tamil/Malayalam)
A tale of two youngsters falling in love through social media and facing an unprecedented obstacle post marriage, this Tamil Malayalam bilingual has not impressed the critics so far. The audience have had mixed response to the film and the days ahead will determine if it worked with viewers or not.
 
Book Club (English)
Diane Keaton starrer Book Club is a comedy film in which four senior ladies and best friends chance upon the A-rated book 50 Shades of Grey during their monthly book club meeting and end up experiencing life changes post that.  

Solo: A Star Wars Story (English)
Solo is one of the umpteen spin-offs of the Star Wars Saga and if you are a fan of the franchise, you would know that Solo is about the backstory of beloved anti-hero Hans Solo. The movie has mostly gained mixed response from both fans and others. 

Parmanu:The Story of Pokhran (Hindi)
Directed by Abhishek Sharma, Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran is based on India's first successful nuclear tests that were conducted in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998. Just like Solo, Pramanu may be off to a mixed start and both these films' delay in production and no-sparks narration may have something to do with it.

Bioscopewala (Hindi)
A modern retelling of Rabindranath Tagore's Kabuliwala, the film is about the central character recollecting the memories of people who walked in and out of his life. Despite having a lesser known cast, the film has managed to gain rave reviews from the critics and by the looks of it the audience seem to be taking a liking towards the film as well. If you are in for a good movie experience, Bioscopewala would definitely be the film-to-go.


The Telugu releases this week Nela Tickefeat. Ravi Teja and Ammammagarillu feat. Naga Shourya aren't off to a good start. While the former is a typical commercial entertainer, the latter revolves around the relationship between the protagonist and his grandmother as suggested in the title.
