Actor Simbu: If asked directly, people of Karnataka wouldn't mind sharing Cauvery Water

In a press meet at his T. Nagar residence on Sunday, actor Simbu aka STR, made a speech where he spoke about why he wasn't a part of the Nadigar Sangam protest on Sunday, attributed Jayalalitha's death to the perpetual chaos in Tamil Nadu and put forth the idea of eliminating middlemen aka politicians in the Cauvery issue.

"From GST to (entertainment) tax to the current strike - we (Tamil Film industry) are struggling to make the government of Tamil Nadu to interefere and solve the problems for us, at this time protesting for Sterlite and Cauvery Management Board just to show our condemnation (to the government) is beyond my level of understanding. Secondly I've been told its a 'silent protest'. All of the current issues are because we didn't 'speak' all these days. Only if we 'speak' will the problems get solved. I apologise if you feel otherwise about my non-participation. Moreover, I wasn't called too, which I do not want to talk about here." Simbu started by justifying his absence in the silent protest of Nadigar Sangam.

"If you had noticed, the entire State has been perpetually chaotic - from Jallikattu to political issues to cinema strike to the heavy rains (natural disasters), all have been taking place as though some witchcraft has been placed - and all this ever since the honourable former Chief Minister, Ms. J Jayalalithaa passed away.Simbu even draws a parallel using the analogy of an unsatisfied soul who takes the role of a troublesome ghost in Tamil cinema. He further reiterates, "A CM in ruling position died and till today only the God knows what really caused her death! The day the truth about her death comes out is the the day Tamil Nadu will see a new dawn."

Weighing in on the IPL matches happening at Chennai at a tensed time like this, Simbu said "People make a controversy if a TR(his father) or Rajinikanth or Kamal says wear black and go watch an IPL Match. My question is why focus on who said this instead of viewing it as whoever said this, it is a statement made for the people of Tamil Nadu.

Simbu finally closes his speech with probably a thought-provoking statement where he says, "If we were to put ourselves in the shoes of Karnataka's people, we would realise that even we would be fiercely protective of the scarce water which the government has ordered us to share with the neighbouring state. All am saying is, instead of relying on politicians who use the tension between two states for their own political mileage or courts, we can directly approach the people (of Karnataka) for it (water). Am sure if asked they would't say no. Only when we do not speak is when the problem arises."

When a member of the press questioned if Simbu was suggesting to 'beg' from Karnataka, the actor promptly replied to loud claps, "Why see it as begging? Why not see it as a humanitarian move? We are all part of the same country and when at home, would we tag eating food after checking with our family members as begging?..we've had enough of discrimination based on state, caste, religion, etc. It's time we rise above all this.."
