With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections just weeks away, actor-turned-politician Vijay has kickstarted his campaign across Chennai under his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). However, his first major political outing has run into controversy, with legal action reportedly initiated against him for alleged violations of the Election Commission’s model code of conduct.
According to reports, a complaint filed by Flying Squad Officer Kumar accuses Vijay of using around 30 loudspeakers without proper authorisation. The complaint also states that the campaign drew a crowd exceeding 5,000 people, leading to traffic congestion, public inconvenience, and even obstruction of an ambulance. Video evidence has reportedly been submitted.
Based on the complaint, Peravallur Police in Chennai have registered a case against Vijay and his party under multiple sections.
Vijay had planned to campaign across six areas including Perambur, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Peravallur, Thirumangalam, SIDCO Nagar, and Ayanavaram. However, the final leg of his campaign was called off by party leadership citing security concerns for the public and his convoy.
Earlier in the day, Vijay filed his nomination from the Perambur constituency around 12:15 PM and began campaigning shortly after. His convoy reportedly took nearly two hours to cover a 5 km stretch from Perambur to Kolathur, as large crowds gathered along the route. Party cadres alleged inadequate police presence and poor crowd management, while also blaming the ruling DMK for disruptions.
Marking his political debut, Vijay is set to contest from Perambur and Trichy East constituencies. Positioning TVK as a strong alternative, he has framed the upcoming election as a direct contest against the ruling DMK led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, campaigning on promises of clean governance. The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled for April 23, with results to be announced on May 4.
