In a classic case of history being repeated, the consumer court fined a snack outlet in Chennai's popular movie theatre, Sangam Cinemas with Rs. 50,000. The case was brought forth by a Karthick Manickam of Koymbedu after he was charged Rs. 10 extra for his order of snacks worth Rs. 140. When he found through his bank that merchant establishments were not supposed to claim additional charges for tele-connectivity for swiping machine, bank transaction or service, Karthick moved the The Chennai (North) District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in 2014 and will now receive his refund of Rs. 10.
In 2004, a Satyam cinema hall in West Delhi had found itself in a similar situation after a consumer court there slapped the movie theatre with a fine of Rs. 50, 000 for selling a packed mineral water bottle for Rs. 30 instead of maximum MRP of Rs. 10. Back then, it was one Mr. Kapil Mitra who brought the case to notice after he was charged Rs. 40 (instead of Rs. 30) and wouldn't be issued a receipt. The court also charged an additional Rs. 10, 000 to be paid to Mr. Kapil back then.
(The fine is usually deposited in the legal cell aid of consumer courts and used in the benefit of the consumers).
