Central government-run National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) had a major alteration today as its chief Nina Lath Gupta was terminated with 'immediate effect' by the Smriti Irani led ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB). The reasons for sacking were said to be grounds of irregularities and favours towards the Television Network Sun TV! It is worth mentioning here that Gupta was appointed managing director of NFDC by the UPA government and has been serving since 2006. She had served with the Indian Revenue Services (IRS) prior to that and was instrumental in reviving NFDC's net-worth from negative with losses to Rs. 116 crore in 2017.
An internal audit revealed NFDC had not maintained proper records and found invoices that revealed channels like Sun TV were 'over-paid' than what was allowed. This over-invoicing is said to amount in lakhs of rupees and is said to have been one of the major reasons for Lath Gupta's sacking. The enquiry report also said that NFDC went out of the way to “favor certain individuals and organisations” while releasing advertisements of the government to these said TV channels.
This would not be the first time the BJP has attacked the Sun TV Network. Two years ago, security clearance was denied to 33 television channels of Sun TV Network, citing criminal cases against the Maran brothers.
